Best Nursing Essentials for New Moms

If you decide to breastfeed your baby, or if you already are, you know how many options there are online for all kinds of bras, covers, creams, pumps, and accessories. The only problem with shopping online is that you can’t actually try it before you buy it and you have to sift through hundreds of items and reviews to get a good idea of which items will work for you.

No mom has time for that.

So here I have compiled a list of the best nursing essentials to help make your search faster and easier!

Nursing Covers

Loving Moments (Walmart)

This cover doubles as a cute scarf, is lightweight and breathable, and is available in store and online for under $10! The shawl design offers better coverage than most nursing covers, and whether you wear it as a scarf or shawl, the neutral tones and material make it cute and comfortable all day.

Udder Covers (

You can find Udder Covers elsewhere on the internet, but they are actually cheaper on Amazon. The D ring design makes the neck easily adjustable and the rigid top allows mama to make eye contact with baby during feeding. It rolls up nicely for slim storage and easy purse transport. Comes in many cute designs for under $10!

Nursing Bras

iLoveSIA (Amazon)

Hands down, most comfortable bras for all occasions. Lots of support without underwire, easiest clip to undo with one hand- they all make this claim, but I’ve come across some extremely difficult clips- and they come in a 3 pack for under $10 a piece!

Gilligan & O’Malley (Target)

best nursing essentials

These crossover style nursing bras are the best nursing essential for my sleep preservation. The thin, breathable fabric and racer-back style make it feel like you’re wearing nothing at all and the crossover front allows for nursing when you are too tired to fumble with clips (it also doesn’t cause a painful indent by your armpit). Sometimes I just lounge around the house in this bra and some leggings! They come in at $22 for the set, well worth  it for comfort!

Breast Pumps and Accessories

Medela Compact Pump (Amazon)

This compact pump is an absolute godsend. Depending on your insurance, you may qualify to receive a free breast pump, but I have seen some bulky, hard to store or transport, options that are great at home, but may not make sense to take with you if you are returning to work. This compact design is lightweight, easily transported in a large purse or a diaper bag, and comes from the best brand in breast pumps. At $140 for the starter kit, this pump is up to half the cost of other bulky pumps and can make your work transition smooth and far less stressful.

Anything Lansinoh (Various Retailers)

I swear by their lanolin above any other brand, and their milk storage bags have a convenient lay-flat design, clearly marked measurements, and superior time and date tracking. They also have incredible support both through their online moms group and the help links on their website. Lansinoh is easily found at most major retailers, and is priced very competitively!

Nursing Pillow

My Brest Friend (Amazon)

Many hospitals carry this nursing pillow, and for good reason. The simple wrap around design provides extra support and keeps your nursing pillow in place for added relief and stability. They have so many cute cover options and even offer a twin feeding version! Less than a dollar separates the cost of this pillow and the next leading competitor, which should help make your shopping decision much easier. You can find the model pictured for about $30 depending on the cover pattern.

Glider/ Rocking Chair

Shermag Aiden Glider+Ottoman (Babies R Us)

I am always genuinely shocked to see that this set is half the price of other, less comfortable gliders that don’t even come with a foot stool! This glider and ottoman set runs for $199 at Babies R Us exclusively, and is hands down the most comfortable chair for any body type. The movement is fluid and whisper quiet, and will last for years. The only down side is that you’ll never want to get up, so make sure you’re close enough to baby’s bassinet so you can set them down before you inevitably fall asleep in this chair!

Breastfeeding is a cost effective, safe, intimate bonding experience that provides immeasurable benefits to you and your baby. Our bodies were designed to provide this loving care to our newborns, but the nursing essentials listed above can make feeding your little one more comfortable and enjoyable for the both of you!

  1. This is great! When I was pregnant or started breastfeeding I bought so much that I didn’t really need or end up using. This list is simple and the items are truly things that women will want to use! (I especially loved my Udder Cover!)
